You nailed the install. The blend is seamless. The rows are secure.
But a few weeks later, your client texts you with the dreaded:
“I think something’s wrong with the hair.”
Let’s be honest — nine times out of ten, the issue isn’t the install.
It’s the aftercare.
And no matter how incredible the quality of your wefts, the truth is this:
Extensions are only as good as how they’re treated between appointments.
Here’s What Clients Need to Know
Before you send them out into the world with a fresh head of hand-tied or genius wefts, make sure they know the rules — because these aren’t optional.
Use sulfate-free, extension-safe products
Especially for textured or lightened hair. Harsh surfactants strip moisture and wreck curl integrity.
Brush from the ends up
No more yanking a wet brush through like it's a race. Teach them to section, take their time, and brush gently.
Keep it hydrated
Dry wefts lead to breakage, tangling, matting — and yes, that dreaded “crawling.” Lightweight oils or leave-ins from mid-shaft to ends go a long way.
Sleep like you care about your hair
Braids, silk wraps, low ponies — whatever works. Just no loose, dry, tangled messes on cotton pillowcases.
Watch the heat
Unlike natural hair, extensions don’t bounce back. Less heat = longer life. Heat protectant is not optional.
This Is the Difference Between 12 Months and 4
Good installs matter. Great hair matters.
But long-term success? That comes from care.
Whether it’s hand-tied, genius, or anything in between — the principles don’t change. And when your client knows the why behind the how, they’re way more likely to stick to it.
